In this Hans Christian Andersen tale, a young orphan girl loves the shoes her foster mother said she could not have (having destroyed a similar pair given to the girl by her birth mother) so much that she dances in them non-stop. Soon she finds that she actually can not stop dancing and asks the town's executioner to cut off her feet, not kill her, so she could spend the rest of her life repenting for her sins.
